Abstract
All human red blood cells regardless of type were agglutinated by phosphate buffer saline extracts of roots of the Korean Trichosanthes Kirilowii Max. By absorption of the extracts with selected human red cells, an anti-H lectin has been prepared. In the agglutination inhibition of anti-H lectin prepared from Trichosanthes Kirilowii Max. with human saliva noted that the inhibitory nature is quite identical to group 0 human serum but differs from anti-H lectin prepared from Ulex eurojieus.
And in the agglutination inhibition of anti-H lectin prepared from Trichosanthes Kirilowi¢¥ Max. with various sugars, both specificities to H(+) and H(-) red cells are inhibited by D-galactose, and only specificity to H(?) red cells is by L-arabinose. By absorption with L-arabinose, anti-H iectin can be fractioned from Trichosanthes extract easily. Therefore, authors designated anti-HT. lectin to avoid confusion.
It is suggested that it may also prove possible to fractionate similarly type-specific lectins from other plant extract currently considered to be non specific hemoagglutinins.
